A Theorem Prover for Prioritized Supernormal Defaults

چکیده

We present a top-down theorem prover for arbitrary clauses and defaults of the form true : δ/δ (supernormal defaults) with priorities. This especially allows to specify the perfect model semantics for stratified programs, but it includes also disjunctions, classical negation and more general defaults than the usual negations. In this paper, we concentrate on the handling of the priorities and consider only the credulous approach to multiple extensions. But the ideas from [Bra92a] can be used to get the skeptical and the careful semantics corresponding to prioritized circumscription and an extension of the GCWA. The most interesting aspect of our work is that we are able to incrementally check the applicability of the defaults during the main proof (via our notion of partial extensions). Other theorem provers for prioritized circumscription [BG89] had to postpone this test into a second phase. So our approach seems to be closer to the usual “negation as failure” rule which evaluates negated literals when they occur in the proof. A prototype of the theorem prover has been implemented in Prolog.

DP — A System for Reasoning with Supernormal Defaults

DP is a top-down theorem prover for supernormal or Poole-type defaults. Axioms and defaults can be arbitrary clauses, i.e. it supports disjunctions and (real) classical negation. Multiple disjunctions can be handled credulously, skeptically, and carefully. In skeptical mode, the expressivity of supernormal defaults corresponds to variable circumscription. The system is based on model eliminatio...

A Theorem Prover for Prioritized Circumscription

In a recent paper, Ginsberg shows how a backward-chaining ATMS can be used to construct a theorem prover for circumscription. Here, this work is extended to handle prioritized circumscription. The ideas to be described have been implemented, and examples are given of the system in use. 1 Introduction Of all the approaches to nonmonotonic reasoning, Mc-Carthy's circumscription [McCarthy, 1980, M...

Modular Speciications with Supernormal Defaults ?

We add a simple module system to speciications with super-normal defaults. It allows to distinguish between \deening" and \calling" occurrences of predicates. This greatly improves the understandability of large default speciications and especially helps to solve the problem of unwanted contrapositions of rules. Our approach is similar to the distinction between head and body of logic programmi...

Darr – a Theorem Prover for Constrained and Rational Default Logics

Default logics represent an important class of the nonmonotonic formalisms. Using simple by powerful inference rules, called defaults, these logic systems model reasoning patterns of the form ”in the absence of information to the contrary of. . . ”, and thus formalize the default reasoning, a special type of nonmonotonic reasoning. In this paper we propose an automated system, called DARR, with...

On the Semantics of Supernormal Defaults

Our aim is to clarify which nonmonotonic consequence relation |∼∆ is given by a set ∆ of “supernormal” defaults, i.e. defaults of the form (true : δ)/δ. There are in fact a number of proposals for |∼∆ (e.g. the skeptical and the credulous semantics). In this paper we look at the space of all possible default semantics and try to characterize the known ones by their properties, especially the va...
